De-Reservation in central institutions like IITs, NITs should stop immediately: Education Minister

Central Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan instructed all CEIs to stop transferring unfilled reserved seats to the open category students. Education ministry has asked response from central government funded institutions regarding de-reservation of seats.

Union Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan has asked to immediately stop de-reservation of seats in Central Education Institutions (CEIs) including IITs and NITs. Education minister has directed central government funded institutions to follow the reservation policy and not transfer unfilled reserved seats to the general or open category students.

As per a report, the Education ministry has asked an immediate response over this from the Central Education Institutions. The union education minister has further asked the colleges to ensure admission to the reserved category seats and if required cut-off for the reserved seats can be decreased. The minister has also asked to provide an additional year of learning to ensure admission in reserved category seats.

As per the officials, the ministry has received such complaints that the reserved category seats belonging to the SC, ST OBC (non creamy layer) in the central institutions of the country are being transferred to the unreserved category students in case they are not filled. Following this, Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday directed that this practice by CEIs must immediately stop and necessary provisions to ensure fulfilment of reserved category seats must be taken.

Seeking a report on this matter, the education ministry stated, ” admissions to the Central Education Institutions (CEIs) are administered by the CEI (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2006 and CEI (Reservation in Admission Amendment Act, 2012. There is no provision mentioned in these Acts for the conversion of reserved vacant seats and making them available to open category students.” As per the report, the Education minister proposed various measures to ensure that reserved category students are getting admission on the set seats and he instructed them to provide coachings to the reserved category student for preparing for the entrance examination and support them in every possible way.
