Ghaziabad: Boy leans out of school bus window, dies as head hits pole

GHAZIABAD: A 9-year-old boy died on his way to school on Wednesday morning after his head hit an electricity pole when he leaned out of the school bus window to throw up as he felt sick. The bus had taken a sharp turn at that very moment, leading to the fatal injury. The Class 4 student, Anurag Bharadwaj, was fine when he boarded the bus but had possibly felt suffocated in the vehicle, which has father alleged was crammed with students. Preliminary inquiries by the administration, however, indicated the 42-seater bus was not packed to capacity, though other transport norms were purportedly flouted. Police said the incident took place around 7am when the bus was headed towards Dayawati Public School in Modinagar. “The kid leaned out of the window and that’s when the driver took a turn. Anurag’s head hit an electricity pole,” said SP (rural) Iraj Raja. “Immediately, the bus staff took the boy to a nearby hospital, but he died during treatment,” Raja added.
The driver Omvir Kumar and helper Jaipal fled after the incident but the two were arrested hours later. Based on the parents’ complaint, police filed an FIR against the school’s owner Umesh Kumar Modi, principal Netrapal Singh, Omvir, Jaipal and others in the school management. “The principal is being questioned. Police will take further action on the basis of the investigation,” the SP said. The FIR was filed under sections 302 (murder) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC. A spokesperson for the school said, “Anurag was not feeling well and opened the window so that he didn’t vomit inside the bus.” This is the second fatal accident involving a school bus in NCR this week. On Monday afternoon, a 4-year-old boy in Gurgaon was run over by his own school bus, which had started moving before the boy could fully alight at his stop, leading him to lose balance and fall. A case was filed against the driver and the school administration.
Chief minister Yogi Adityanath offered his condolences to Anurag’s family and ordered the district magistrate to send a report to his office as soon as possible. Anurag’s father Nitin Singh Bharadwaj said his wife Neha had dropped the boy to the bus stop near the gate of their residential society, Surat City, in Modinagar. “Around 7.15am, we received a phone call from the school that Anurag had received some injuries and was admitted to a private hospital,” he said. At the hospital, the parents were told that the boy had been referred to KCM Hospital in Meerut for advanced treatment. “We rushed to Meerut where the doctors told us that our son had died of head injuries,” Nitin said. “When my wife had gone to drop Anurag, she saw more students were sitting inside the bus than there were seats. She complained to the driver, but he argued with her. My wife had complained about the same to the principal in the past, but no one took action,” he alleged. In the complaint filed by Neha, she has claimed she had an argument with the principal, management and driver on this on April 1. According to an inquiry report by SDM Modinagar Shubhangi Shukla, that wasn’t, however, the case. “The report says the driver Omvir, helper Jaipal and a primary school teacher were present in the bus. The boy did not reach out to the teacher before he leaned out of the window. The reasons will be looked into. The 42-seater school bus had 29 students,” said district magistrate Rakesh Kumar Singh. “The fitness certificate of the bus had expired, and no CCTV camera was installed inside. The administration will take action,” the DM added.
Additional regional transport officer Vishwajeet Pratap Singh said the school bus had been blacklisted. “The fitness certificate of the bus expired on March 7, 2021. The RTO issued notices to the school. But they didn’t (renew it). On October 10, 2021, the RTO blacklisted the bus. The bus kept plying without a fitness certificate,” he said.
